ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the effect of virtual reality (VR)-based baduanjin exercise on the cognition, physical functioning and life quality of elderly persons with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Methods:Fifty-seven mildly impaired elderly persons were randomly divided into an observation group ( n=29) and a control group ( n=28). Both groups were given routine care and health education in their nursing homes, while the observation group additionally performed 50 minutes of VR baduanjin exercise three times a week for 24 weeks. Both groups were assessed using the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA), the Rivermead behavioural memory test (second edition) (RBMT-Ⅱ), a digit-symbol substitution test (DSST) and the Trail Making Test (TMT). The short physical performance battery (SPPB) and Alzheimer′s disease quality of life (QOL-AD) instrument were also administered before and after the 24-week intervention. Results:After the intervention the average MoCA, RBMT-Ⅱ, DSST, TMT-A, SPPB and QOL-AD results of the observation group were all significantly better than before the intervention and better than the control group′s averages. The observation group also performed better on the 5 times sit-to-stand test, the tandem standing test and a walking speed test after the intervention.Conclusions:VR-based baduanjin practice can effectively improve the cognition and physical functioning of mildly impaired elderly persons, as well as improving their quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the effects of 4 gingival retraction methods. Methods: 48 premolars were selected from 12 periodontal healthy volunteers and were randomly divided into 4 groups(n = 12 teeth) and treated with different gingival retraction methods: Ultrapak E(group UL) and three kinds of cordless gingival retraction, including Expasy1 (group EX), Astringent Retraction Paste (group AS) and Racegel(group RA). Perfusing plaster models were prapaired after useing putty-wash impression technique. A 3D digital model was reconstructed by a 3-shape model scanner for each patient. Data were collected before and after gingival retraction and analysed by the Geomagic Studio 2013 in the mesial, middle, and distal sides of the selected teeth. Results: Effective width of gingival retraction were all obtained in the 4 groups. The most effective effects were observed in group UL, followed by group EX, group AS and group RA, among the groups, F = 1 114. 4, P< 0. 000 1. Conclusion: Cordless gingival retraction technic can achieve effective gingival retraction.

ABSTRACT

@# Objective To explore the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on oxidative stress and total peripheral vascular resistance. Methods 36 prehypertensive patients were divided into aerobic exercise group (n=18) and control group (n=18). The aerobic exercise group performed cycle ergometry at 70% maximal oxygen consumption for 30 min. Total peripheral vascular resistance (TPVR), malondialdehyde (MDA), mean arterial pressure (MAP), vitamin C (VC) and vitamin E (VE) were measured before, immediately, 1 hour and 2 hours after the aerobic exercise. Results There was no significant difference in TPVR, MDA, MAP, VC and VE between two groups before exercise (P>0.05). TPVR was all significantly lower in the aerobic exercise group than in the control group immediately, 1 hour and 2 hours after exercise (P<0.001), and showed a rising trend of recovery. MDA was significantly higher in the aerobic exercise group than in the control group 1 hour and 2 hours after exercise (P<0.05), however there was no significant difference in MDA between two groups immediately after exercise (P>0.05). MAP was significantly lower immediately after exercise in the aerobic exercise group than in the control group (P< 0.001), but there was no significant 1 hour and 2 hours after exercise (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in VC and VE between two groups immediately, 1 hour and 2 hours after exercise (P>0.05). Conclusion The level of oxidative stress increases after a single bout of aerobic exercise, and the TPVR decreases.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on intestinal vitamin D receptor (VDR) mRNA and protein expression in ovariectomized rat model, and to explore the possible mechanism of acupuncture treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods Sixty 3-month-old female SD rats were randomly divided into operation group and sham group.3 months after osteoporosis model was successfully produced, rats in operation group were randomly divided into model group,EA sham group,EA group and drug group.12 weeks after intervention, bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar spine and femur were detected, then rats were all sacrificed to extract the small intestinal mucosa.VDR mRNA and protein expressions were determined by real-time quantitative PCR and Western blotting. Results The model of postmenopausal osteoporosis was successfully established. The bone mineral density was significantly improved in EA group and drug group as compared with the model group at 12 weeks after intervention.Western blotting and realtime quantitative PCR showed that small intestinal VDR mRNA and protein expressions were increased in EA group and drug group, but the increment of VDR mRNA expression was less in EA group than in drug group. Conclusions One of the mechanisms of acupuncture treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis may be related with increasing the intestinal VDR mRNA and protein expression levels and enhancing the bioactivity of vitamin D.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo compare the therapeutic effects of acupuncture combined with drug and simple drug for treatment of male osteoporosis.

METHODSFifty-five cases were divided into an observation group (25 cases) and a control group (30 cases) randomly. The observation group was treated with acupuncture and moxibustion at Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Mingmen (GV 4), Shenque (CV 8) and so on combined with taking Alendronate, while the control group was treated with taking Alendronate simply. The improvement of both Integral of Clinical Symptoms (ICS) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of two groups was observed after 6 months treatment.

RESULTSThe ICS of two groups after treatment both decreased significantly (both P < 0.001), and the decreasing degree in observation group was more significant than that in control group (P < 0.001). The BMD of lumbar vertebrae and femur in observation group increased obviously than that before treatment (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). The increasing degree of BMD of lumbar vertebrae in observation group after treatment was more obvious than that in control group (P < 0.05). There were abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia and other adverse reaction in control group, while the degree and occurrence rate of those in observation group alleviated and decreased obviously.

CONCLUSIONThe effect of acupuncture combined with drug for treatment of male osteoporosis is good with little adverse reaction. This method is better than taking Alendronate.

ABSTRACT

AIMTo investigate the induction of endothelial cell apoptosis and the suppression of VEGF expression in cancer cells by sodium caffeate (SCA).

METHODSApoptosis of transformed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECV304 cell line) was detected by flow cytometry, DNA electrophoresis assay and morphological assessment. Western blotting analysis was applied for determination of VEGF expression in cancer cells. Substrate degradation by type IV collagenase was measured by zymography. ELISA was used to detect the binding of type IV collagenase with relevant monoclonal antibody.

RESULTSSCA induced ECV304 cell apoptosis in a time- and dose-dependent manner. After treatment with 100 and 250 microg X mL(-1) of SCA for 48 h, DNA laddering appeared. SCA treated cells showed strong blue fluorescence and distinct changes of nuclear morphology, such as pyknosis and the occurrence of apoptotic bodies. VEGF expression in hepatoma HepG-2 cells and prostate carcinoma DU145 cells was reduced after SCA treatment. The degradation activity of type IV collagenase including MMP-2 and MMP-9 secreted by giant cell pulmonary carcinoma PG cells was inhibited by SCA in a dose-dependent manner. SCA also reduced the binding of mAb 3D6, a relevant monoclonal antibody, to type IV collagenase.

CONCLUSIONSCA can induce endothelial cell apoptosis and inhibit VEGF expression as well as type IV collagenase activity in cancer cells. SCA might be active in modulating tumor angiogenesis and the microenvironment.
